Vic Mensa is bringing his talents to the big screen.
Vic Mensah to Star in Upcoming Feature Film African American. A biopic based on the life of the late rapper ProKid. Just recently, we saw Mensa make his debut on the Showtime series “Qi,” and he’s quickly making his mark on the big screen. Set in South Africa’s post-apartheid renaissance, the film follows Howard University alumnus Syd Money as he works with South African hip-hop pioneer ProKid. The Roc Nation artist from Ghana, who is West African, will play Syd.
“South Africa next,” the Chicago rapper and activist posted about his new role on Instagram.
ProKid, who died in 2018 after suffering a seizure, was known for promoting Kasi rap. The film is a tribute to ProKid and attempts to draw parallels between the African and African-American experiences.
Movie synopsis: “As an African-American travels to Africa to find his roots, he bonds with a young South African in search of the ‘American Dream,'” the Shadow Alliance reports.
The Soweto-born artist is known for helping to popularize a mixture of English and “vernac” (Isi Zulu and South African township slang) rap, also known as Kasi rap. To help create the critically acclaimed album ‘Heads and Tales’, Syd Money assembled a team that would go on to become one of the most prolific hip hop producers in South Africa today. Those familiar will recognize names like Draztik, Omen, AMU, Dome, Dplanet, Hoodlum, Beatmaker, and Nyemz.
Together they changed the course of South African hip hop forever. Album by ProKid head and story, DNA and Dankey Hill Considered the 3 most influential albums in the history of South African Hip Hop. His most popular songs include “Soweto” and “Wozobona”.
Hip-hop drama written by actor/writer Jamie Burton-Oare (affectionate steps) and writer/director Skye Dennis (angel of myra), who will also direct. As well as Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, making her directorial debut. African American By actor/producer Lanre Idewu (HBO Max’s the south), Hall and Dennis of A Mama’s Boy Productions, and Rashidi Hendrix (Hulu’s Set the facts straight: The Jam Master Jay Case) for metal entertainment.
