Popcaan’s advice to young adults and young artists who want to pursue a musical path and reach their full potential states that self-confidence is paramount.
Popcaan started out as a disc jockey on Vybz Kartel’s Portmore Empire label in the late 2000s, as he became known as a crowd-pleasing lyricist. Despite his international success as an OVO artist, the Jamaican presenter shares that his success comes from believing in and achieving his goals.
“My advice is you have to believe it, you know it. You have to believe it first, because I’m speaking from my experience,” Popcaan began.
The artist constantly shares his background growing up in the parish of St. Thomas, one of Jamaica’s poorest and plagued by a lack of opportunities for young people. Popcaan used music to lift himself up and continues to help others and his community through music.
The artist said he has always maintained an optimistic attitude, attracting better circumstances for himself.
“Not everyone is like Popcaan You know, I’m very optimistic, I believe in myself a lot, and I see it before it happens. I believe in the law of attraction. I attract what I want to myself. I attract Blessings and good life, I’ve attracted millions and billions to myself. That’s it,” the artist said in a recent interview in Canada, where he was doing a press conference to promote his new album, great is him.
Poppy added, “You’ve got to say it’s there, you’ve got to believe it, you’ve got to see it happen, trust me.”

The St. Thomas native signed to Canadian rapper Drake’s record label OVO Sound and Warner Music in 2016.
Popcaan is widely regarded as one of the most prolific dancehall artists of this generation. The showrunner rose to prominence in the late 2000s and early 2010s before catapulting to the top of the genre and becoming a household name. Poppy, whose real name was Andrae Hugh Sutherland, was born in the country parish of St Thomas, where he began his musical career as a protégé of Vybz Kartel, one of the biggest names in dancehall when he had his own imprint, Poppy Termor Empire.
Popcaan’s breakthrough was their debut album “Where We Come From” released in 2011. The album received critical acclaim and helped Popcaan become a major force in the dancehall world. He went on to release hits over the next few years, including “Only Man She Want,” “Unruly Rave,” and “El Chapo.”
In addition to his solo work, Popcaan has collaborated with many other international artists including Drake, Jamie xx, Young Thug, PARTYNEXTDOOR, French Montana, Burna Boy, Davido and Skepta. While Popcaan is known for his trendy bars and shows, he’s also one of the dancehall’s best live performers, as evidenced by his recent Kingston gig with Burna Boy.
Despite his success, Popcaan has faced many challenges in his personal life, including legal issues with his fair share and the death of his close friend Unruly Shagel, who was murdered at the artist’s home in Kingston in December 2018.
