Doja Cat has called on fans to compare her shaved head look to Britney Spears’ hairstyle years ago, which she calls “disrespectful”.
The rapper debuted several new looks, from her brows disappearing to her later shaved head for a bald look. For many, the look reminded them of Britney Spears in 2007, when the eccentric singer went bald in what the media called a “meltdown” .
As for Doja Cat, the rapper previously shared that she hates body hair, which is why the hair removal is the reason, even though it’s unconventional. She also shared that she doesn’t want anyone to focus on her hair and beauty to dictate what she does to her body.
In an interview with Variety, Doja Cat addressed the comments and criticism she’s received since going bald in 2021, noting that the comparisons are disrespectful and minimize Britney’s troubles.
“It’s very disrespectful for people to minimize what Britney went through and make fun of something very serious and important in her life,” Doja began. “Every time I see a comment like that, I don’t know what’s going on, other than it’s a horrible thing.”
The “Her Planet” artist shared that she decided to cut her hair as a way to connect more with herself, especially since it has to do with the beauty standards imposed on her.
“I wasn’t working out and I wasn’t really taking care of myself the way I wanted to. I was like, ‘I need to do something,’ so I just cut it all off,” she says. “And I can see the shape of my head. I can see my whole face…it’s the best choice I’ve ever made, and I’ve never felt so beautiful.”
At the same time, Doja Cat’s personality and music often generate a lot of public discussion, especially as fans and critics debate whether she’s a rapper or a pop star. The “Woman” artist shared that she’s coming out with another album, and fans might be surprised that it has “punk” soundtracks.
“I wanted to explore punk,” she said. “But not pop-punk. I feel like we have enough pop-punk artists right now. If it needs more, make it more, but I don’t think I’m the one to do that… I want to explore more original, Unfiltered, hardcore punk stuff. It was just something I did for personal fun — get some drummers and guitarists together. And I didn’t even know if it was going to work.”
In a recent interview with Elle, she did confirm that her 2023 release will be a double album produced by 9th Wonder and Jay Versace.
