Ballroom artist Popcaan revealed Thursday that he has never been to the United States and does not have a visa allowing him to enter the country.
In a tweet, the “Related” artist shared that he wanted to launch a campaign for his first visit to the US. Popcaan is an avid traveler, having traveled to Canada, Europe, and even Africa several times over the past few years. However, he said that despite being regarded as an international artist, he has never been to the United States.
“Why are they asking me to go anywhere outside of the US?? Something is wrong!!!” Popcaan said in a tweet. “Well, I want to see what America is like. Let’s start our first campaign in America today!!! #GIHE GO!”
The campaign has since gathered more than 500 signatures, with fans of the artist urging the US government to grant him a visa to travel to the country. The goal is to get 1,000 signatures, and he’s on his way. Whether he can obtain a visa depends entirely on the government. As for why he has not obtained a visa, it is still unknown, and the US government is not obliged to explain the reasons for the refusal.
Popcaan’s revelations contradict a post he made in 2019, when he claimed to be in New York City. He was also set to perform at the Red Bull Clash event in Atlanta in August of the same year, but on the day of the event, the artist shared that he was banned from traveling due to issues with his paperwork, though he gave no reason or further explanation Things that happened.
Popcaan has been dogged by immigration issues since entering the UK last year. The artist’s lawyer, Bert Samuels, revealed he had been blocked and Jamaican officials allegedly put a red flag on his record.
The Jamaican police force later responded to the artist’s allegations, clarifying that Popcaan’s profile had been issued a green notice, alerting authorities to a 2011 arrest for cocaine possession and a 2009 conviction for marijuana possession in Barbados.
However, Popcaan’s lawyers filed a defamation suit against the Jamaican government and the JCF for denying the allegations, noting that he was never “arrested for cocaine possession in Barbados or anywhere else” and that his “marijuana-related Conviction” was removed from the criminal record in April 2016.
It was not immediately clear whether the issue was related to Popcaan not having a U.S. visa.
Popcaan’s tweet about campaigning for his US visa has fans sharing their support for the artist, who is also due to release his fifth studio album on Friday, January 27 and may hope to Tour to maximize the performance earning potential of the album.
“Hey, know, lock arffffff once you hit the end of it,” said one fan.
“LOLz…I’m sure the consulate will reconsider after the album comes out,” said another fan.
Popcaan is pushing again for a US visa following reports that Beenie Man has been granted a visa to travel to the US later this year. For the first time in years since his visa was revoked by US authorities in 2010, the artist performed at California’s Lover & Friends Festival alongside some of the biggest names in music.
Popcaan released his latest album, great is himFriday, is currently running a promotional campaign for the project in Canada.
