Musician Fred White, vocal pioneer and drummer for chart-topping band Earth, Wind & Fire, has died at the age of 67.
In 1974, 19-year-old White joined the band along with the band’s founders – his siblings Maurice and Verdine White.
In a statement, Verdine White praised his late brother’s musical talent and dedication to music, saying, “He was in heaven with our brothers Maurice, Monte and Ronald and is now drumming with the angels! Disciples , member of EWF ORIGINAL 9, gold record at 16! He is the 4th brother in the family. But more importantly, he is a great brother both at home and out, always funny and also Very naughty!”
His older brother Morris died in 2016 at the age of 74.
The band has sold over 50 million records worldwide and is responsible for creating a unique and iconic sound that fuses disco, soul, jazz, pop, R&B, funk, disco, big band, Latin and Afro-pop genres . Although Fred left the band in the 1980s, he returned for a reunion show with the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
The official Earth, Wind & Fire Instagram account shared a video of White playing the drums solo during the band’s world tour in 1979.
A cause of death was not immediately provided.
